I’m a firm believer in the rewards of internships–both for the college students and the companies that invest time in them.
Internships are new at The San Diego Sun. Our first, talented team of three interns includes Madison Geering and Joshua Silla from San Diego State University and Seri Thompson from Point Loma Nazarene University.
They’ve hit the ground running. Look for their bylines over the next three months (though in Thompson’s case, know that she’s taken over our social media output).
Here’s an introduction, in their own words:
Madison Geering (Senior Journalism major at San Diego State University). “In my time interning at The San Diego Sun (and as a San Diego native), I’ve experienced the diverse, fun and colorful stories downtown has to offer. This internship has given me the opportunity to explore those stories even further. So far, I’ve been able to write about local design projects, monthly event roundups, and am currently working on a feature profile. After I graduate, I plan on continuing in the world of magazine journalism, hopefully with an internship or job in the field.”
Joshua Silla (Third-year Journalism major, and Political Science / Science, Technology and Society Studies (STSS) double minor at SDSU). “I’ve written about the San Diego Public Library and am at work on another feature. My writing can be boiled down to three mainstays: human interest, great quotes and politics. Being interested in structural critique, my journalism is informed by a people-first lens. I’m constantly wondering how people can best be served through policy. There’s a wealth of opportunities to write about that in downtown San Diego. In the future, I hope to write for a company like Vox or the Los Angeles Times.”
Seri Thompson (Junior at Point Loma Nazarene University studying Organizational Communication). “I’m the social media intern–most of the Instagram posts and stories you see are created by me. Since beginning my role here, I have learned more about concerts, restaurants and events happening everyday in this city. This opportunity has also opened my eyes to local news in downtown San Diego. Future plans: I absolutely love San Diego and hope to stay in Southern California post grad. I’m hoping to pursue a career in live events; anything in sports/concerts/live entertainment.”
