The San Diego City Council has rescheduled an evening meeting with a special agenda focusing on the city budget for Wednesday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers.

Originally scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, May 18, the event was postponed in deference to a mass shooting that day at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Five people, including two shooters, died during the incident.

Special San Diego City Council evening sessions are scheduled to allow working residents and the general public the opportunity to participate in the process after standard business hours.

Elected officials are in the process of closing a fiscal year 2027 budget that had been $120 million in the red.

Supporters of the arts and culture community are still trying to convince local lawmakers to put nearly $12 million back in the budget to support a variety of organizations. Arts and culture leaders who’d planned a rally prior to the May 18 meeting are considering reorganizing a protest on May 27.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria failed to restore arts funding when he released his May Revise version of the city’s $6.4 billion dollar budget on May 9.

He did put back library and recreation center hours and services in council districts 4, 8 and 9, and restored staffing support so that the annual December Nights in Balboa Park event could continue, among other small line-item additions.

The official agenda for the May 27 special meeting is now online.

The city’s Independent Budget Analyst will issue a report outlining recommended City Council modifications to the budget on June 2.

The city council will hold final hearings and votes to approve the Adopted FY 2027 Budget on June 9. SDSun
