During my time at The San Diego Sun, I had the opportunity to write stories that helped me better understand and embrace the downtown San Diego community.
Born and raised in San Diego, I’ve always felt knowledgeable about what the city had to offer. However, during this internship, I got a more direct glimpse into the heart of America’s Finest City.
Writing stories about art galleries and trivia nights, I was part of vibrant and exciting experiences. By taking a hands-on approach and visiting the places and people I wrote about, I gained a holistic perception of downtown as being a diverse, eclectic and inspiring community.
Journalism has always been an important pursuit because of how it enables me to hear and tell new, meaningful stories. While writing for The San Diego Sun, I encountered stories that allowed me to broaden my perspectives and get to know the faces that make up the mosaic of downtown. Joshua George, co-owner of Smokin’ J’s BBQ, was one of those faces. His story shed light on the importance of resilience and creativity in approaching new challenges.
Beyond the community, my internship allowed me to feel more in-the-know about the goings-on of the area. By spearheading the site’s first monthly event roundup, I was able to put a finger on the pulse of downtown’s happenings — from a Shrek-themed rave to monthly yoga at The Rady Shell. I’ll definitely be attending more events downtown since discovering how many unique experiences there really are.
As I conclude my internship, I’m left with a bittersweet feeling. Writing for The San Diego Sun has been fun and enlightening, and I know that I’ll carry the stories I wrote with me in my career and life. I’ll also carry with me a deeper understanding of my hometown, one that I’m looking forward to sharing. SDSun
