James Beard Awards: Downtown San Diego Chef Tara Monsod Makes Semifinalist List

Animae executive chef finds out if she’s a finalist for the prestigious national designation in April.

A downtown San Diego chef has been included in the prestigious James Beard Foundation’s national list of semifinalists in its annual 2024 Restaurant and Chef Awards.

Tara Monsod, executive chef at Animae has been selected on the list of Best California Chefs.

In The San Diego Sun’s Downtown Dining Readers’ Guide, Animae was picked as one of the top restaurants in the Marina District and one of the Best Overall restaurants in downtown.

Monsod’s menu at Animae reflects her passion for Filipino-American flavors and dishes.

Before becoming executive chef at Animae, Monsod worked locally at Herringbone, Tender Greens and Juniper & Ivy.

Established in 1990 and first awarded in 1991, the James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards are one of five separate recognition programs of the James Beard Awards.

The awards recognize exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system, as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability, and a culture where all can thrive.

Finalists will be announced on Wednesday, April 3, and winners will be announced at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on Monday, June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
