The Beatles, Karl Strauss Brewing Company and thesandiegosun.com each have three words in common: Follow The Sun.
Here’s the connection:
- In 1964, Paul McCartney and John Lennon co-wrote the song “I’ll Follow The Sun,” an early Beatles hit.
- Karl Strauss forged the Southern California craft beer craze when it opened its downtown San Diego doors in 1989; today the brewery pours a refreshing lager called Follow The Sun.
- In barely post-pandemic 2022, The San Diego Sun website was founded to bolster downtown-centric news. In 2025, Follow The Sun was branded as a call to action to subscribe to the news site’s popular newsletter.
To roll this fab story into a neat bow – anybody who subscribes to The Sun’s free weekly newsletter automatically becomes eligible to win a $25 Karl Strauss gift card.
Thank you to Karl Strauss’ marketing department for trusting The Sun to build recognition and have some fun with two downtown San Diego brands. Obviously, the beer brand is iconic. Our news website is up-and-coming.
Over 36 years, Karl Strauss has won more than 130 national brewing industry awards. The Sun isn’t yet four years old and has published 24 local award-winning stories.
Karl Strauss’ original brewery is located downtown at 1157 Columbia Street (near B Street). Company founders and college buddies Chris Cramer and Mark Rattner just formally bought the building and refurbished the interior. If you haven’t seen it lately, come back for a look-see.
While supplies last, there’s a special running at the brewery. Buy a 20-ounce Follow The Sun draft beer and take home the engraved glass mug for just $20.
Our site’s “Follow The Sun” campaign just kicked off in April and will continue until we run out of gift cards. Keep an eye out for the different and crafty ways we’ll pop up with contests and chances to win $25 worth of Karl Strauss food and beverage.
Oh, and thanks to the wiser heads at Karl Strauss, who advised us we weren’t allowed to simply give away six packs of Follow The Sun beer. Which we totally would have done.
As McCartney famously said: “Let it be.”
