Female students from four different elementary schools in San Diego County will compete in a technical competition to showcase their skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) on Saturday, February 10.

The 2024 Tech Challenge, hosted by the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, is the culmination of the school year’s SciTech program.

The challenge will task students with designing and building a device that can successfully drop, land and deploy, similar to the Mars rovers. This competition will allow students to demonstrate their problem-solving and teamwork skills, as well as their creativity and critical thinking skills, while also exploring the principles of STEM.

“One of the most touching moments at SciTech is witnessing the unwavering determination of teams during the Tech Challenge preliminaries,” says Fleet Science Center youth engagement manager Sandy Valdiva. “Despite facing setbacks, their resilience shines through as they refine their designs.”

The competition will bring together students from Avondale Elementary School in Spring Valley, Bayside STEAM Academy in Imperial Beach, Palomar Elementary School in Chula Vista, and Vista Grande Elementary in El Cajon.

SciTech is a free afterschool program exclusively designed for female and female-identifying students in grades 4–6 attending elementary and middle schools in San Diego County.

“SciTech provides a clear path for every girl interested in STEM by connecting them with experts and fostering a supportive community,” Valdivia says.

The February 10 event runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Fleet Center’s Heikoff Giant Dome Theater.

The event is included with admission to the Fleet Science Center and is open to the public.
