The San Diego Sun recently hit a noteworthy milestone by publishing its 50th personality profile in a long-running series focused on downtown residents.
Every profile starts with this introduction: “Living In the City” is The San Diego Sun’s feature Q&A with downtown San Diego residents. It’s a way to get to know the city by meeting the people who live here.
To mark the golden anniversary of the series, The Sun is doing a minor update to the questionnaire presented to downtown residents. Along with a few new questions, look for the next profile subject to be an unlikely and unexpected choice. (Coming soon!)
It’s been a diverse, eclectic and entertaining two-and-a-half-year run of getting to know city dwellers from all the 92101 neighborhoods: East Village, Core-Columbia, Cortez Hill, Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy and the Marina District.

Some fun facts about Living In The City profile subjects:
- The youngest were Little Italy sisters Allesandra (24) and Gabrielle (26) Elicone.
- The oldest were Cortez Hill husband and wife Joyce (77) and Gordon (81) Summer.
- Madeleine McCormick (East Village) and Julieta de Carvalho (East Village) had lived downtown for a matter of months.
- For the last 36 years, architecture superstars and husband-and-wife Rob Quigley and Kathleen Hallahan lived in (and helped build) Little Italy and East Village.
- President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority Julie Coker weighed in on living in Little Italy.
- We heard about life in the city from Little Italy stand-up comedian Jillie Reil, East Village political pundit Laura Fink and former sportscaster/Marina District resident Katy Temple.
- Little Italy’s Sal Giametta used to work for a San Diego mayor, a county supervisor and at the Tourism Authority. Not only was he a LITC profile subject, now he’s The Sun’s official “Faces & Places” photographer.
