A charitable cause can be a legitimate excuse for side-stepping your diet path. One of the most delicious good causes is Friendly Feast’s Chocolate Bake Sale.
You’ll be doing the right thing if you get your hands on an Opera Tart (a chocolate tart shell with an espresso-soaked almond sponge, coffee buttercream and whipped chocolate ganache).
San Diego food writer Erin Jackson’s fourth annual chocolate bake sale returns to Little Italy’s Herb & Wood on Sunday, February 22. Six esteemed pastry chefs from area restaurants have prepared unique, chocolate-y items that are included in boxes that sell for $45.
The nonprofit Friendly Feast will donate 100% of sales to Feeding San Diego and World Central Kitchen.
“People love chocolate and the money goes to good causes,” Jackson says.
Friendly Feast also awards $500 scholarships to student pastry chefs studying at Mesa, Grossmont and Southwestern community colleges.

Each Friendly Feast box includes a:
- Dark Chocolate, Orange, and Hazelnut Blondie by Kylie Cablayan, Herb & Wood
- Chocolate Coconut Macadamia Slab Cake by Ari Gastelum, Juniper and Ivy
- S’mores Cupcake by Audrey Hermes, Frost Me Cafe & Bakery
- Ruby Chocolate Trifle by Daisy Garcia, Continental Catering
- Opera Tart by Clementine Mitrani-Bell, Clem’s Confections
- Triple Chocolate Paris Brest by James Foran, Grossmont College
The boxes are being sold in advance on the Friendly Feast website for pickup at Herb & Wood. First come, first satiated.
Keep an eye out later this year for Friendly Feast’s Pop Up Doughnut Shop and Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship. SDSun
