National Bike Month has hit its top speed in San Diego.

SANDAG’s Bike Anywhere Day was Thursday, May 16, 2024. Formerly known as Bike To Work Day (for 30 years), the event is promoted via 100 “Pit Stops” around San Diego County. Bike riders stop at the pit stops for food, drinks and a free t-shirt.

In 20203, SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) reported that more than 7,500 people stopped at pit stops around the county.

The downtown San Diego pit stop at Eighth Avenue and J Street was busy when I pulled up at 8 a.m. on Thursday. A staffer told me they’d seen at least 50 people since opening up at 7 a.m.

In addition to Bike Anywhere Day, SANDAG is introducing the first Bike Local Day, on Saturday, May 18. This new event encourages families and individuals to bike in their communities and enjoy promotions from participating local businesses.

Local businesses across the San Diego region can participate by offering specials and discounts to patrons who arrive on two wheels on Bike Local Day.
