“Local News Day” Recognized By 1,300 Newsrooms Across The Country

The San Diego Sun is proud to participate in this national effort to bring attention to independent local news outlets

Local News Day is a national day of action connecting Americans to local, independent, and trusted news sources like The San Diego Sun. Led by Montana Free Press and more than 1,300 local newsrooms nationwide, it creates opportunities for businesses, nonprofits, influencers and everyday Americans to celebrate and uplift local journalism.

Want to stay connected to local news in downtown San Diego? It’s free to subscribe to thesandiegosun.com’s weekly newsletter, which in arrives email inboxes every Sunday at 7 a.m. (Like an old-fashioned Sunday newspaper.)

The Sun covers politics, current events, homelessness, residential life, business owners, nonprofit voices and anything that’s news in downtown San Diego’s 92101 ZIP Code. Sun Editor Ron Donoho is a veteran journalist who’s written for nearly every local news outlet, as well as many regional and national publications.

A story about a political disconnect in the Gaslamp Quarter that recently appeared in other local outlets first appeared in the Sun in October 2025. The Sun also forced Mayor Todd Gloria to find a new parking spot after our story pointed out his SUV was regularly parked in an illegal “daylighting zone.” Citizens are being charged $117.50 for that infraction.

Stories like these are at the core of Local News Day. In an increasingly divisive national climate, Local News Day reminds Americans to return to their roots and engage with what is happening closest to home.

Local news matters because it helps residents: stay informed, ensure accountability, celebrate community, empower voices and build trust. SDSun
