To mark its 150th birthday, the San Diego Natural History Museum is opening Nature Trail at the Nat. It’s a public garden that features indigenous plants.

The 22,000-square-foot outdoor trail will be less than a quarter of a mile and free to the public.

The Nature Trail at the Nat will open on June 29, coinciding with Balboa Park’s Garden Fair (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). If you know your way around the park, the trail will be just across the lawn from the Moreton Bay Fig display area.

The new trail, which is ADA compliant, seeks to promote plants that require less watering and are fairly self-sufficient.

Nature Trail at The Nat was backed financially by private donations and partnerships with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, the Barona Band of Mission Indians, Forever Balboa Park and Spurlock Landscape Architects.
