It’s time to update The San Diego version of the iconic board game Monopoly. And the public can share input.
Since the original game (based on locations in Atlantic City, New Jersey) appeared in 1935, upwards of 275 million units have been sold, and reportedly enjoyed by more than one billion players in 114 countries. In 1995, after owner Hasbro offered out licensing rights, San Diego was the first city to have its locations weaved into the game board. An updated San Diego version was created in 2002.
In the first weekend of March 2025, board game mascot “Mr. Monopoly” was in downtown San Diego scouting possible new slots for the next San Diego version. Local reps say Mr. Monopoly visited Petco Park, The Gaslamp Quarter, the Embarcadero and several other downtown sites.
“San Diego is such a unique and diverse community with rich history,” says Jennifer Tripsea, a representative of Top Trumps USA Inc., which has the licensing rights (and is not affiliated with the President of the United States). “We aim to ensure that MONOPOLY: San Diego Edition is an accurate portrayal of what San Diego locals and tourists love about this charming city.”
The original Monopoly board had game spaces for Boardwalk and Park Place. San Diego versions have included the likes of the San Diego Zoo and The Hotel del Coronado.
The makers of the new game board for San Diego 2025 are looking for public insight. Anybody with a suggestion for a space on the board can email: SanDiego@toptrumps.com.
Deadline for suggestions is April 11, 2025. The new game board is scheduled to debut later this year in November. SDSun
