Why ice cream, gelato or frozen yogurt? Because summer’s here and so’s the need for a cold, sweet treat – after a day in the sun, a reward for a work day or “just because.” For those reasons, here are seven spots in downtown San Diego to offset rising thermometers.
Ben & Jerry’s

This chain is an internationally renowned household staple, for good reason. Located in Seaport Village, the flavor selection includes extensive lactose-intolerant vegan options. Ben & Jerry’s is also proud to hold a strong commitment to social and environmental causes, including climate change, racial equality and LGBTQ+ rights.
Bobboi Natural Gelato

With a bright storefront, beautiful interior and welcoming staff, Bobboi is a North Little Italy gem. With all-organic ingredients and nothing artificial, Boboi sweetens all of its gelatos with organic cane sugar and agave syrup. Distinct flavor options include dragon lemon, charcoal vanilla and berry white.
Cali Cream Homemade Ice Cream

Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, Cali Cream offers more than 70 flavors that change every three to four months. The store prides itself on the freshness of its ice cream. Every batch is made onsite and scooped within seven days of being made. And servings here are always heaped high.
Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop

A classic, located on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter, Ghirardelli boasts a beautiful, spacious interior to enjoy its offerings. This is the place for a world-famous hot fudge sundae, and several other specialty sundaes are on tap. FYI, the hot fudge and whipped cream are made in-house. There’s also a wide variety of chocolates for sale.
Pappalecco

Here’s a relaxed, cafe vibe with lovely indoor-outdoor dining areas. This is a location to sit with a gelato, and perhaps an espresso, and enjoy la dolce vita in Little Italy. Pappalecco has a stunning variety of authentic Italian gelatos, and also serves a full menu of food and beverages, including standout paninis.
Salt & Straw

Time your visit to this popular Little Italy spot – there’s often a line out on India Street. Salt & Straw is environmentally conscious (bravo for the reusable spoons) and the ice cream is smooth, creamy and delicious. Where else are you going to find Gruyere and tomato custard, or pear and blue cheese cups or cones? Now offering: The Summer Pies Series.
Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt

Located on the promenade level of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel, Sweet Things specializes in all things frozen yogurt and acai. This is a family-owned business that puts its heart and soul into everything it serves – from extensive vegan options to primarily fruit-based, healthy alternatives. SDSun
