Election 2024: Who Are The Candidates In Mayoral, D3 City Council Races?

The starter’s gun has fired for political races in 2024.

Candidates who will appear on the upcoming municipal ballot include Mayor Todd Gloria, facing four challengers in the mayor’s race, and City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, facing three challengers in the District 3 race (which covers downtown San Diego).

San Diego will hold its primary election on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. 

Here are the candidates in downtown San Diego’s two most impactful races (check back on The San Diego Sun in coming weeks for deeper political coverage of candidates and issues): 

San Diego Mayor

  • Todd Gloria (Democrat, incumbent San Diego mayor since 2020)
  • Larry Turner (Independent, community relations officer for the San Diego Police Department)
  • Genevieve Jones-Wright (Democrat, executive director of Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance)
  • Jane Glasson (Republican, special education assistant)
  • Dan Smiechowski (Independent, real estate professional)

District 3 City Councilmember

To vote, check your voter registration to verify your political party preference, home address and mailing address. Updates and new voter registration can be done online.

Under the California Voter’s Choice Act, every active registered voter in San Diego County will receive a ballot in the mail the week of February 4, 2024.

Voting options include:

MAIL IT. You can complete your ballot at home and return it through the U.S. Postal Service. 

DROP IT. Starting Tuesday, February 6, voters can drop off ballots at any official ballot drop box located around the county.

VISIT. In-person voting can be done in a variety of ways: 

  • Starting Monday, February 5,  early voting is available at the Registrar’s office, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Starting Saturday, February 24, select vote centers and the Registrar’s office will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 4.
  • Starting Saturday, March 2, all 200+ vote centers and the Registrar’s office will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 4.
  • On the final day of voting, Tuesday, March 5, all vote centers, official ballot drop boxes, and the Registrar’s office will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
