Waterfront Park has a new active recreation area that features pickleball courts, a basketball court and other options for the outdoor-sports minded.
The greenspace that surrounds the San Diego County Administration Building (1600 Pacific Highway) has been the setting for a children’s playground, a fountain system (that’s currently inoperable) and swaths of grass that host a variety of concerts.
Along with pickleball and basketball facilities, the new recreation area (on the northeast corner of Waterfront Park) has a table tennis area, a five-station fitness apparatus and a fenced space for off-leash dogs.
“We built this area in less than a year and planners worked creatively to fit as many features as they could into a relatively small space,” County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation Director Brian Albright said in a press release.
All the new amenities are free to use by the public.
A nearby office offers equipment check-out, also free. The rentals are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the summer, and the office closes an an hour earlier from fall to spring.
The recreation area is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
