In May, we say, thanks to our moms. Traditionally, we eat, drink and dance at the Gator by the Bay Festival. This month, the on-off-on-again Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival is going to give it another go. And bow your heads for Memorial Day (before you hit the bars to celebrate the unofficial start of summer). To keep busy and entertained this month, The Sun recommends:

Now through May 12 (Every day) The “Butterfly Effect” takes on a bigger meaning at this immersive, once-a-year experience. Walk into the zoo’s Hidden Jungle aviary as butterflies fly all around you, making for a whimsical spring adventure (and a great photo op). More info

Mother’s Day at The Headquarters

May 12 (Sunday) Hosted at artist Walter Redondo’s gallery, in collaboration with The Grape Underground, this celebration includes indoor yoga, mimosas, live painting, wine tasting and live music by Jolene Cruz. The mother of all Mother’s Day events? More info

Gator by the Bay Festival

May 9-12 (Thursday to Sunday) Ten thousand pounds of crawfish are among the special guests at this vibrant celebration of Louisiana food, culture and music. With more than 100 musical performances and plenty of room to dance, this family-friendly festival has become a beloved tradition. More info

Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival

May 10-12 It’s back! Appreciate emerging and iconic musicians at this waterfront festival, where artists like Weezer, Dominic Fike and Carly Rae Jepsen will be performing. After each day’s worth of artistic output, head into the heart of downtown where there will be afterparties galore. More info

Bike Anywhere Day

May 16 (Thursday) Formerly called “Bike to Work Day,” now its an opportunity to ride to work, school, the beach or anywhere. Bike Anywhere Day is free to sign up for (to be eligible to win a Velotric e-bike). Stop at one of the 100 pit stops around the country and get a free t-shirt. More info

Moonshine Flats 10-Year Anniversary

May 16-18 (Thursday to Saturday) Break out your cowboy hats and dust off your boots for this venue’s anniversary weekend filled with country music, line dancing and rowdy celebration. A self-proclaimed “in your face honky-tonk experience with a sexy edge,” Moonshine Flats promises boot-scootin’ good time. More info

WNDR After Dark

May 16 (Thursday) Enjoy WNDR’s vibrant exhibitions under the cover of night during this extended hours event. This experience includes drinks, snacks, a local DJ and multi-sensory installations around every corner. More info

Salsa Under the Stars

May 17 (Friday) Dance your heart out while you enjoy a sunset by the sea at The Headquarters. No experience or partner is necessary to participate in this night of salsa with Manny Cepeda & Orchestra. More info

Lord Huron at The Rady Shell

May 22 (Wednesday) Known for their breakout hit, “The Night We Met,” Lord Huron is bringing their moody, atmospheric indie rock to downtown’s world-class-outdoor music venue. Lord Huron’s opening act is the up-and-coming Cover County. More info
