The legendary, old-school dive bar Star Bar will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a nostalgic evening celebration on Tuesday, March 19.
This unaffected Gaslamp Quarter anomaly eschews all things fancy and chi-chi, and still has some of the lowest drink prices in town.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this landmark anniversary with our loyal patrons and the San Diego community,” Star Bar manager Josh Evans said in a statement. “Star Bar has been a landmark in the Gaslamp Quarter for 50 years, offering a welcoming place for fun, friendship and memorable nights out.
Generations of downtown tipplers have glorious memories of pre-gaming here before weekends of bar-hopping…and, slightly fuzzier memories of laugh-filled nightcaps.
Expect a party cameo by Star Thompson, long-time owner and namesake of Star Bar. In February 2021, Thompson sold the building at Fourth Avenue and E Street—which includes Star Bar, the Astor Hotel and a restaurant space—to San Diego-based Oceanic Enterprises.
The half-century celebration will feature the launch of the Star Bar‘s own lager, created in partnership with Mission Brewery.
Star Bar will donate $1 from every beer sold to local causes, starting with Father Joe’s efforts to serve San Diego’s homeless population.
The March 19 anniversary party will run from 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
