The San Diego Sun was recognized twice at the Society of Professional Journalists (San Diego Pro Chapter) 2024 Journalism Awards dinner held June 27 at Stone Brewing in Liberty Station.
Two stories by editor Ron Donoho, one about a youth homelessness jobs program and another about a high-end karaoke lounge, caught the eye of judges.
“Chargers Legend Rolf Benirschke Backs Homeless Youth Enterprise” won first place in the Daily Reporting and Writing (News Story) category. A judge wrote: “A finely crafted piece. It is a heart-warming community story with a deeper dive into an important social issue.”
“Gaslamplighter: An Upscale Karaoke Lounge With A Family History” was awarded second place in the Daily Reporting and Writing (Feature Story, Light Subject) category.
“Local news holds an important place in the community and The Sun is committed to keeping that connection alive,” said Donoho, who earlier this year delivered a TEDx San Diego speech entitled, “Your Local Newspaper Is Dying — Why You Should Care.”
Over the course of a The Sun’s nearly three-year existence, the hyperlocal downtown news website has accumulated 19 local writing awards from the SPJ and the San Diego Press Club. SDSun
