The San Diego Sun’s recent investigative feature story about the current condition of the Gaslamp Quarter caused a higher than usual response from readers. We’ve chosen to print some of those emails to the editor.

The original story was headlined “New Parking Fees And A Political Disconnect Hinder Business In The Gaslamp Quarter” (click the link to see the piece).

Note: This is the second follow-up that includes public input on the Gaslamp. Check out updates to the story and several other letters HERE.

The following is the most recent letter:

“I have been a realtor downtown for 23 years and have lived downtown for 20. We no longer go downtown… It is such a shame to see what downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter has become. I was always excited to share information about the Gaslamp and the restaurants themselves but in the last few years I suggest to my clients to investigate Little Italy and the Columbia District where the smell is not so strong and the chances of being harassed by a vagrant is slimmer.

“I feel so sorry for the owners of shops in the Gaslamp where you never know who or what is going to walk in and start a problem. I had an office on Fifth Avenue for 10 years and had interesting people come in but nothing like the crazies we allow to roam the streets now.”  –Stephanie Erickson, Realtor
