With news that greasy spoon extraordinaire Perry’s Cafe was closing on August 15, my wife and I made a biking pilgrimage to the Old Town site on Pacific Highway for a last goodbye. And possibly some eggs and toast.
Lots of other people had the same idea. On Sunday, August 4, we arrived before noon to find the entrance jammed with patrons waiting to get in. Like us, they were looking for one last no-frills and low-priced meal from this 39-year-old landmark.
My wife and I eschewed the long wait to get in, figuring we had a week to make another trek.
Unfortunately, on Monday, August 5, owner Perry Eulmi closed the doors for good. A week early.
Eulmi shut it down because the staff was burning out after huge crowds began arriving after the closure notice, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
A sign posted on the wall at Perry’s read: “We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the thousands of people that have crossed our door during our 39 years in business. Your loyalty and patronage have meant the world to us and it has truly been our pleasure to serve you.”
My wife and I didn’t patronize Perry’s often. We did visit there for breakfast once soon after we started dating. The place held an affectionate spot in our hearts.
In Perry’s place, a 223-room residential project will be developed by Viewpoint Development LLC. SDSun
