More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to participate in a cleanup operation of San Diego Bay. The 34th annual Operation Clean Sweep takes place on Saturday, August 24 from 8 to 10 a.m.

The cleanup is orchestrated by The Port of San Diego and San Diego Working Waterfront.

In 2023, nearly 1,000 volunteers removed 10.5 tons of trash and debris — including shopping carts, mattresses, household appliances and other items — from the San Diego Bay and the surrounding waterfront.

“We all want clean water and clean neighborhoods, so we have to pitch in and pick up the trash that comes out of storm drains, or down creeks or from flood channels, mucking up the shoreline or settling onto the bottom of the bay,” San Diego Working Waterfront president Sharon Cloward said.

Volunteers can choose the spot they want to help clean up. Downtown locations include the Embarcadero and Seaport Village. Other areas include Barrio Logan, Chula Vista, Harbor Island, National City and Coronado.

Each volunteer receives a free t-shirt, and the San Diego Working Waterfront is holding a volunteer after-party on Shelter Island at Shelter Island Shoreline Park. Participants can vie for prizes in the day’s “Most Unique Trash” contest.
