The 26-year veteran cop Scott Wahl has been confirmed as the 36th police chief of the City of San Diego.
The former assistant chief, who was selected by Mayor Todd Gloria, was unanimously confirmed by the San Diego City Council on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Current Chief David Nisleit is retiring in June. Wahl’s first day will be June 7.
Wahl is currently serving as assistant chief of special projects and legislative affairs. Over his career, he’s had a variety of assignments. Wahl began as a patrol officer before becoming a detective in the vice unit. He was the department spokesperson for three years and then captain of the Northern Division.
“I’m committed to being transparent,” Wahl says. “I’m committed to being held accountable for the words out of my mouth, the actions that I will bring forward to you.”
A nationwide search was conducted to fill the position. Wahl is the third straight police chief to take over after serving in the ranks of the SDPD. SDSun
