Homeless encampment in downtown San Diego.

The San Diego Regional Task Force on Homelessness is gearing up for the area’s annual Point-In-Time Count (PITC) on January 25, 2024.

The count is required by the federal government. Budget and policy decisions are determined based off the numbers collected.

The local task force is hoping for 1,200 volunteers to help compile the data and at last check was was below that number.

Volunteers help with various tasks, such as gathering demographic information about unsheltered people found in tents, sleeping bags and vehicles. Note: The counts are done at night and volunteers should plan to bundle up and wear warm clothing.

The volunteers also help survey safe parking lots, where people live out of cars. The city of San Diego also has two new safe sleeping sites, which allow individuals and couples to stay in tents.
