Some strollers are surprised by the video billboard, approved two years ago by the MTS Board of Directors
The new Gaslamp Quarter Digital Information Board.

Behold, the new Gaslamp Quarter Digital Information Board. The site-commanding, three-sided billboard has been erected at the Gaslamp Quarter trolley stop between the Hard Rock Hotel and the San Diego Convention Center.

The addition may take some downtown residents or regular visitors by surprise. The project was approved by the Metropolitan Transit System Board of Directors in December 2022, according to an MTS press release.

The overall structure height is approximately 50 feet tall, and two displays boards are about 20-by-30 feet.

The digital information board will provide advertising and promotion opportunities for local businesses and conventioneers. It’s also a new stream of non-fare revenue for the transportation agency.

After initial hearings and meetings with local businesses in the Gaslamp area, the project was modified before being approved, according to the MTS statement. Modifications included ensuring the footprint of the board does not get in the way of the iconic Gaslamp Quarter sign and view down the Fifth Avenue corridor.

The digital information board will operate between 6 a.m. and midnight every day, and with static-only (non-video) displays running from 11 p.m. – midnight. SDSun
