Chances are there’s a National Day designated on the calendar that celebrates your favorite food or beverage. That’s definitely the case if you love, say, chicken wings, watermelon, oysters or rum. Here’s where (and when) to go in downtown San Diego if you want to dine and drink with like-minded foodies:

  • National Chicken Wing Day. There’s no time to delay getting to El Chingon. Today (Tuesday, July 29) is the “Bad Ass Mexican” eatery’s spicy chicken wing eating contest. Prizes go to the top three teams. Registration is free. More info.
  • National Watermelon Day. After your stomach settles the wings at El Chingon, come back on Sunday, August 3 for the watermelon eating contest. This is an individual contest in which contestants are not allowed to use their hands. More info.
  • National Oyster Day. No need to race to finish your plate of $1/each oysters at Lionfish at the Pendry Hotel. A dozen oysters for $12 is the price nature intended. Shucks, you can savor this briny delicacy on Tuesday, August 5. More info.
  • National Rum Day. This versatile spirit’s special day is Saturday August 16. Yo-ho-ho, Barleymash is partnering with Bacardi on three specialty cocktails: a Blue Hawaiian, a Daiquiri and a Rum Old Fashioned. More info.

CROSS PROMOTIONS

If only our politicians could reach across the aisle and work together in a bipartisan fashion the way these food-and-beverage operations are able to:

  • There’s only one showing left to take advantage of a unique movie-and-meal deal that pairs the historic Balboa Theatre and the decor nostalgia of The Smoking Gun. On Sunday, August 3, the Retro Rewind Series at the theater will show Ghostbusters at 1 p.m. and Shaun of the Dead at 6 p.m. Just show your mobile movie ticket at The Smoking Gun and get 20% off your bill, and a $10 Arcade Comp Card.
  • Two of the best in their respective fields are teaming up to produce cocktail-infused ice cream. Now through September (while supplies last), downtown’s Cali Cream is taking its homemade treats to the Cutwater Spirits Tasting Room. Over-21 guests can peruse the menu, and perhaps settle on the Mango Margarita Sorbet or the Pina Colada Ice Cream + Ube Sherbert Twist.  SDSun
