Despite no-shows by striking Hollywood celebs, anticipation is in the air in downtown San Diego

The familiar feeling of anticipation is in the air. A day before the dawn of Comic-Con International 2023, walk down Fifth Avenue toward the San Diego Convention Center. Feel the excitement and hope of pre-COVID yesteryears.

No matter that striking unions of writers and actors will keep the celebrity glow away this year. If the Gaslamp Quarter was the setting of a post-strike movie, maybe it’d be called Rise of The Nerds: Cosplay Saves The Day.

And actually, one celebrity says she’s coming to town: beloved Jamie Lee Curtis! The Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar-winner is coming as author of her debut eco-horror graphic novel, Titan Comics’ Mother Nature.

Curtis posted on Instagram: “AS WE ARE NOW ON STRIKE AS PERFORMERS [with SAG-AFTRA] let’s FOCUS on the OTHER ART FORMS!”

We can all scream for that.

Here’s Comic-Con Eve 2023 (July 19) as seen through the lens of San Diego Sun photographer Sal Giametta. Check back daily for Giametta’s portraiture of The Con:
