FACES & PLACES: Chicano Park Day 2023

This celebration of Chicano culture returns for the first time post-pandemic, with a colorful mix of food, art, lowrider cars and lots more

It was a gorgeous, sunny day (finally!) in Barrio Logan for the 53rd anniversary of Chicano Park Day on April 22, 2023.

The annual event–held for the first time since the pandemic–featured food, arts, lowrider cars and cultural recognition.

Most of Chicano Park is located under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the park contains the country’s largest collection of outdoor murals.

Chicano Park Day celebrates the nonviolent takeover of the parkland by local residents in 1970. A 12-day occupation of the land forced the city of San Diego to honor it’s promise of developing the land into a park.
