This prime piece of real estate on the corner of Fifth and Market in the Gaslamp Quarter has seen several name changes over the years: from Searsucker to Lavo and now AKA. The owners are hoping to redefine the spot with a new restaurant that offers a blend of Chinese, Japanese and Thai food.

AKA has an electric vibe and shareable Asian fusion dishes. The menu is curated by renowned Chef Takuya Kudo. My favorite will always be the sushi options. The lamb chops were tasty, with a green curry sauce served on the side, the miso cod was cooked perfectly. Yow can you go wrong with wagyu drunken noodles, wasabi mashed potatoes, filet mignon potstickers, or the cream cheese Rangoon. Yes, there are vegan dishes.
One of my favorite pieces of decor is the big beautiful Buddha that can be seen even before you walk in.
“Aka” means red in Japanese, and the vibe here is red hot. I’m delighted to have yet another hot spot here in my backyard to dance the night away. SDSun
