The third and final day of Comic-Con Special Edition 2021 brought out:
- Reminiscence of a unique gathering.
- Anticipation for next year’s regularly scheduled summer event.
COVID caused the wildly popular sci-fi convention to shutter for the past two Julys. For the first time, organizers put on a post-Thanksgiving show (November 26-28).
The crowds were smaller, but enthusiasm didn’t wane at this year’s scaled-down Comic-Con.
Hollywood blockbusters and celebrities were not in abundance as in past years. However, there was a John Cena (Peacemaker, Suicide Squad) sighting at Saturday night’s Masquerade Competition.
Tommy McDonald (pictured below, dueling Star Wars-style in front of the San Diego Convention Center) has an enlightened take on the benefit of holding The Con in November: “The weather is cooler, so you don’t get as hot in your outfit.”
Check out more reactions from cosplayers at this year’s show who were asked: What’s the best thing you saw at Comic-Con Special Edition?
Milo Phimmasone (Gloomy Bear): “I saw officially costumed cosplayers for all three playable characters from ‘Little Nightmares.’ Also, a booth with all the Demon Slayer figurines.” |
Husband-and-wife first-timers Daniel and Jordan Cervantes: “The cosplay was creative and unique,” Jordan says. Adds Daniel: “You could tell people wanted to get out of their homes and do things, again.” |
Ziion Alexander: “It was dope. I like the gamer stuff…but mostly that Comic-Con is back. My grandfather and I used to come every year, and now he’s gone, so I came to celebrate him.” |
First-timer Lily Villont: “The best thing I saw was John Cena at the Masquerade Party on Saturday night!” |
Bobo Fett (as a member of the Legion, not allowed to give out his real name): “All of the Bad Batch [Clone Force 99] was cool to see.” |
EDITOR’S CHOICE: “I was blown away by the guys who recreated the spooky robot girl from the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ scene from ‘Squid Game’ (see video, below). They created a stir in San Diego with their mobile display, backed by the eerie soundtrack from the Netflix series.”
