The U.S. Presidential candidates are debating tonight (Tuesday, September 10). San Diego’s mayoral hopefuls are scheduled to do a televised debate on ABC 10 News on Tuesday, September 17.
Candidates in less-publicized political races are also debating each other, which is good for the democratic process. Ultimately, though, the most important part of the election process comes down to voting.
Are you registered to vote? And do you know how the voting process has become more of a month-long opportunity rather than a one-day event?
Here are the basics:
There’s still time to register to vote in the November 5 General Election. If you meet all the state’s requirements, go to registertovote.ca.gov/ to start the process. Ideally, you should be registered to vote at least 15 days before an election (October 22, 2024).
It’s better not to wait that long, however. Voting material mailings start to go out 29 days before an election.
VOTING OPTIONS
Under the California Voter’s Choice Act, every active registered voter in San Diego County will receive a ballot in the mail the week of October 6, 2024.
Once you receive a ballot there’s no need to wait until Election Day to vote. Prior to November 5, people can vote by mail or at a vote center in their neighborhood.
If you vote by mail, make sure to seal the ballot, sign it and date it. Ballots can be dropped in any blue U.S. Postal Collection Box. The San Diego Registrar also has Official Ballot Drop Boxes located around the county. Or, eligible voters can return their ballots early to any secure Vote Center in the area.
